How Laser Tattoo Removal Works
Laser tattoo removal uses ultra-short pulses of high-intensity light to break apart the ink particles embedded in the skin. When the laser energy hits the ink, it shatters the particles into fragments small enough for the body's immune system to recognize and carry away. Over the weeks following each session, the ink gradually fades as those fragments are processed and eliminated by the lymphatic system.
Different ink colors require different laser wavelengths to target them effectively. Black and dark blue inks absorb a wide range of laser energy and tend to respond most quickly. Colors like green, teal, and yellow can be more stubborn and may require additional sessions or specific wavelengths to address fully. During your consultation, we'll assess your tattoo's ink colors, depth, age, and layering to give you a realistic picture of what results and timeline to expect.
Older tattoos that have already faded naturally often respond more quickly than fresh ones. Professional tattoos with dense, consistent ink application typically take more sessions than amateur ones, which tend to use less ink applied less uniformly.

What to Expect During and After Treatment
Each session is relatively quick, often just a few minutes for a small tattoo and up to thirty or forty minutes for a large one. The sensation has been described as ranging from nearly pain-free to similar to a rubber band snapping repeatedly against the skin. A cooling device or topical numbing will be used to keep the treatment comfortable.
After treatment, the area will look frosted or white immediately, which is a normal reaction to the laser. Redness and swelling over the following day or two are also expected parts of the healing process rather than signs of a problem. Keeping the area clean, moisturized, and protected from sun exposure supports the best healing.
Sessions are typically spaced six to eight weeks apart to allow the body time to clear the fragmented ink between treatments. Trying to rush the sessions doesn't speed up the final result and can increase the risk of side effects. Patience is part of the process, and we'll keep you updated on your progress at each visit.
Laser tattoo removal progressively breaks down ink pigment using your body's natural elimination process, fading or completely clearing unwanted tattoos over a series of sessions.

How many sessions will I need?
Most tattoos require six to twelve sessions for significant clearing, though this varies depending on ink colors, density, depth, and how your body responds. We'll give you a more specific estimate after evaluating your tattoo.
Does tattoo removal hurt?
Most patients describe it as more uncomfortable than getting the tattoo, similar to a rubber band snapping quickly against the skin. Topical numbing cream can be applied beforehand to reduce discomfort significantly.
Will the tattoo be completely gone?
Many tattoos can be completely cleared, particularly those with dark ink and good initial contrast. Some tattoos, especially those with difficult ink colors or dense layering, may leave behind faint ghosting. We'll set realistic expectations based on what we see in your consultation.
How long do I wait between sessions?
Sessions are spaced six to eight weeks apart. This gives the immune system time to clear the fragmented ink from the previous session before the next treatment. Spacing sessions properly is important for both results and skin safety.
